Documenting visual traces of site-specific landscapes tied to her heritage, Tellings of(f) a Mae to her Luuk Sao introduces the artist’s first dual video installation—a composite dialogue extending from the figure of Luuk Sao, a persona embodying the dichotomies of cultural hybridity and the tender beginnings of womanhood as a daughter.
Unaware of the camera’s gaze, the video captures a raw, unfiltered intimacy between mother and daughter. Their exchange, peppered with moments of warmth and minor frustrations, reflects the delicate transfer of generational knowledge—an act imbued with fragility, care, and deep consideration, yet carrying both emotional and historical weight.
Set against the backdrop of an English home—its architecture a stark contrast to the garments being worn—the space itself becomes a participant in the unfolding narrative. The familiar walls of the house seem to hold both comfort and tension, emphasizing the complexities of belonging to two distinct worlds while poignantly connecting the artist to an architectural framework destined to fade. Each room, with its quiet shadows and worn corners, feels like a repository of memories, inviting viewers into a childhood home that traces the fragile ephemera of lived experience—shaped by the intersection of time, place, and the bonds of intergenerational relationships that transcend them both.
Footage by both the artist and Stephanie Son.
